Pebble Island, one of the most captivating islands of the Falkland archipelago, is not only known for its stunning beaches and unique pebbles but also for its incredible wildlife. Among penguins, gulls, and cormorants, the elegant Rufous-Backed Hawks (Buteo ventralis) stand out as a highlight for nature lovers and ornithologists.

A Special Experience on Pebble Island

We were fortunate to have Alan the owner of the lodge on Pebble Island take us to a remote part of the island in his Defender. This spot offered the perfect conditions for observing these fascinating birds. Using our telephoto lens, we captured excellent shots of the Rufous-Backed Hawks from a distance. From our vantage point, we even had a clear view of one of their nesting sites, which we photographed as well – a truly unique experience that brought us closer to nature.

The weather was ideal, with bright sunshine and a clear blue sky providing a stunning backdrop. Watching the hawks gracefully soar above us along the island's coastline was breathtaking. The combination of the rugged beauty of the landscape and the elegant movements of these raptors made this day unforgettable.

Habitat and Behavior

On Pebble Island, the Rufous-Backed Hawk finds ideal conditions: open grasslands, rocky hills, and undisturbed nesting areas. This environment provides abundant food and safe retreats. Its elegant flight style, characterized by wide circles and sudden dives when spotting prey, is particularly captivating.

Rufous-Backed Hawks are monogamous and fiercely defend their nesting sites. Their nests are typically built on rocky ledges or in low bushes, lined with twigs and feathers. During the breeding season, the male can often be seen calling while proudly circling over its territory.

Conservation and Importance

The Rufous-Backed Hawk is protected on the Falkland Islands due to its limited habitat and endemic status. Thanks to the efforts of local communities and conservation organizations, these birds of prey continue to thrive in their natural environment. Pebble Island plays a vital role in their preservation, offering an isolated and undisturbed sanctuary.

A Visit to the Rufous-Backed Hawks

A hike or guided tour on Pebble Island provides an opportunity to observe these majestic birds in their natural habitat. Whether silently soaring through the skies or perched proudly on a rocky outcrop, the Rufous-Backed Hawk leaves a lasting impression and highlights the untamed beauty of the Falkland Islands.
