There are many legends about the mystical and mysterious Escusalla ruins of the 19th century in Ludeiros, a village in the municipality of Lobios in Galicia. The abbot of Manín, Don José Martínez y Parga, is said to have built the house and the associated chapel of San Jose, which has mysteriously remained almost intact. At the entrance there are still the only fully preserved Latin inscriptions: Sacellum D. Joseph framed with the symbolism of Freemasonry, here the Fleur de Lys <1>.

At the entrance of the Escusalla are the chapel and a large courtyard. Afterwards one sees cellar and possibly dungeons. From the actual dwelling house stand only the walls, which separate the rooms. Legend has it that a spirit named Marrequiño, a faceless monk residing there in the 16th century, always appears together with two women. But why does he appear occasionally? Another legend says that the inhabitants of the house killed their artisans and buried in the yard in order not to pay them. Marrequiño is the representation of all these souls of all his victims, who roam the Escusalla on dark nights and gloomy days.

The last inhabitant of the house was called Roque and was a Portuguese tax official. One night he saw Marrequiño with two women and heard horrible animal noises in the house ....

<1> The Fleur de Lys is primarily a stately symbol of French and other monarchies. It stands for the dominance of a small elite over the majority. Furthermore, the lily is a ritual flower whose use can be traced back to at least ancient Egypt. So it is not surprising that the Fleur de Lys, along with other Egyptian symbols, is also found in Freemasonry.
