Located on New Zealand’s South Island, the Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its picturesque golden beaches, turquoise bays, and lush coastal forests. This natural paradise offers an unparalleled experience for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone eager to explore New Zealand’s untamed beauty.

Split Apple Rock: A Geological Marvel

One of the park’s standout features is the Split Apple Rock, a spectacular granite boulder split into two halves, resembling a sliced apple. This natural wonder is a popular photo spot and can be easily accessed from both land and sea – a must-see for any visitor.

Hiking Through Dense Forests

Our adventure began with a boat ride along the park’s stunning coastline. We then embarked on the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. The trail led us through vibrant green forests adorned with towering ferns, across clear streams, and over suspension bridges that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The sounds of nature accompanied us every step of the way, creating a tranquil and inspiring journey.

A Close Encounter with the Red-Billed Gull

At the end of our hike, we arrived at a pristine beach where a special encounter awaited us: a group of Red-Billed Gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae scopulinus), known locally as Tarāpunga. These native birds, easily recognizable by their bright red beaks and legs, moved gracefully along the shoreline. Observing them in their natural habitat was a true highlight of our trip.

A Day Full of Magic

Our time in the Abel Tasman National Park was filled with unforgettable moments – from the scenic boat ride along the sparkling coastline to the hike through dense forests and encounters with unique natural phenomena and wildlife. The awe-inspiring Split Apple Rock, with its striking presence, was a particular standout. This national park is a true gem of New Zealand and should be on every traveler’s list.
