Milford Sound World Heritage Site

Milford Sound is a fjord on New Zealand's South Island. It belongs to the Fiordland National Park, which is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Boat tours along the many waterfalls and through the narrows lined with pointed mountain cones are impressive.

The boat drivers like to awaken the associations that you lead through a tooth-reinforced shark's mouth. But the Maori gave the fjord a different meaning. They call it Piopiotahi after an endemic songbird that is already extinct.
