Landscape

Landscape photography captures the beauty and diversity of nature, from majestic mountains to tranquil lakes. Lighting, seasons, and perspectives are key to conveying the atmosphere of a place. Techniques like wide-angle shots or long exposures enhance the impact of the images.

Bird life at the village of Ekkerøy

Ekkerøy is one of the oldest fishing villages on the Varangerfjord and belongs to the municipality of Vadsø, whose capital is around 15 km away. It is a bird paradise and the suffix "øy" means that it was originally an island that offered shelter and therefore good chances of survival for the diverse bird life. Now the area is connected to the Varanger Peninsula by a narrow isthmus and migratory birds also like to winter here.

Ceavccageađge - 8.000 B.C.

One of the highest concentrations of archaeological sites in the Nordic countries is at Ceavccageađge (Mortensnes in Norwegian) in Varanger. Ten thousand years as a meeting place for hunters, fishermen and traders have left traces of settlements in the landscape, some monumental but many often small and easily overlooked. A cairn is not always just a cairn.

Vadsø at the Barents Sea

Vadsø is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean on the Barents Sea (Norwegian: Barentshavet), which was named after the Dutch navigator Willem Barents. Vadsø is a gateway to Varangerhalvøya National Park, whose wild expanses are unparalleled. We took accommodation right on the sea access in Annijoki at the Varangerfjord close to Vadsø and were the only guests in the house at this time of year (May).

Marla in the Cirque de Mafate

Early in the morning we left La Nouvelle for Marla (1629 m). We wanted to spend the second night in the Mafate in the secluded mountain village. Again, the path was fantastic. It went up and down, along streams and partly through forests. Seeing the massive caldera under a blue sky was impressive, especially as we had had few distant views as we made our way through the cloud forests off La Nouvelle.

La Nouvelle in the Cirque de Mafate

A hike through the gorges and over the ridges of the "Cirque de Mafate" is overwhelming. We started in the morning on the north side of the huge caldera of the Piton des Neiges, crossed the Col de Fourche (1,946 m) and finally reached the small mountain town of La Nouvelle (1,450 m) before nightfall, although it was hidden in thick fog. Our surprise was all the greater in the morning when we were able to continue the hike to the next mountain town called Marla under a blue sky and bright sunshine. The road to La Nouvell was beautiful.
