Lago Catemaco (also Laguna (de) Catemaco) is of volcanic origin and one of the largest freshwater lakes in Mexico. It is located in the state of Veracruz. There is all sorts of things to discover on its islands and shores. The lake is famous for its large, historical community of brujos, the Mexican magicians. Also some huge stone heads of the Olmec, the Mesoamerican La Venta culture, which lived from about 1500 to around 400 BC. lived in Mexico can be found on the shores.
A boat trip across the lake past small and larger islands shows not only the magnificent birdlife but also a colony of macaques and spider monkeys that have settled here.
The picture of the fisherman casting his net in the last rays of the sun before a storm hits the lake was taken just before we left Veracruz.
