Our entry into Tibet was difficult in 1993. In Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, we received an address in a hotel where you could get a visa to enter Tibet. But here we demanded a very large amount of money in cash for a document in Chinese characters whose content and authenticity we could not test. So we declined and decided after another unsuccessful prescription at the visa office the following day, now to ask the Chinese airline CAAC, if we could simply buy plane tickets to Lahasa. "No problem," we were told, but we would not be allowed to enter there. Since the fares were low, we decided to take the risk ... and we were actually allowed to enter Lhasa. We also received accommodation in the Lhasa Inn and were able to start our trips to the Tibetan plateau from here. In Lhasa, the Potala Palace and former government seat of the Dalai Lamas and The Jokhang Temple, the most important sanctuary within the Lhasa Tsuglagkhang, were very impressive. The Potala Palace in Lhasa was the official residence and seat of government of the Dalai Lamas during the time of the Central Tibetan government of Ganden Phodrang. The huge palace is located on the hill "Mar-po-ri", which rises 130 meters above Lhasa, the capital of the autonomous Tibetan area.
