Gadwall (Mareca strepera)

The Gadwall (Mareca strepera) is an elegant dabbling duck, recognizable by its simple yet charming gray-brown plumage. It prefers calm waters with dense vegetation and is found in Europe, Asia, and North America. Gadwalls are intriguing photography subjects, especially during their breeding season.

Gadwalls have a simple plumage, which does not look very opulent in the drakes even as a breeding plumage. We were able to photograph the rare birds in Iceland, Bornholm and Belgium.
